National Trust is also looking for a Waxcap Project Officer
Fixed term (12 months)
Hardcastle Crags, West Yorkshire, HX7 7AP
The loss and fragmentation of our unimproved grassland is well documented - 97% have been improved in Britain since the 1930s. Alongside the loss of botanically species rich grasslands has been the loss of unimproved grasslands containing important populations of waxcaps and other fungi including the Fairy Clubs, Pink-gills and Earth tongues. Our vision is to safeguard and restore the unimproved grasslands owned by the NT and surrounding Hardcastle Crags. These grasslands have been proven through external expertise and extensive survey work to contain grassland fungi assemblages of national and international importance. We want to expand the survey area in order to identify the extent of grasslands important for fungi in the wider Calder Valley. This is a key priority as fungi exist as meta-populations and it is therefore important we are not managing our grasslands in isolation.

It's National Park Week

This year the event coincides with another special date - the 70th anniversary since the first National Park, Peak District National Park, was created in the UK on 17 April 1951. This was at a time when the UK was still very much recovering from the impact of two World Wars and National Parks opened up access to the countryside in a way that had not existed before. Sound familiar? Fast forward 70 years and our country is, hopefully, just about coming through another major crisis in the shape of the global pandemic.
