Andy Goulden is a Trainee Ranger with The ESCC Trainee Ranger Scheme. The Scheme is a full-time, 12 month placement combining work-based learning with an NVQ Level 2 in Environmental Conservation. Andy writes, The position is unpaid and because I am not eligible for benefits I am a self-funding student. However, the County Council fund all training, supply the necessary clothing and PPE, provide rent-free accommodation and cover petrol expenses in order to help limit the cost of living. I had already completed a Geography Degree but was keen to develop a 'hands on' career in countryside management and conservation. The placement was an excellent opportunity to supplement my existing theoretical knowledge and acquire the necessary practical skills needed to work in this sector.
The main role of the trainee is to assist Rangers on-site. This involves managing and improving habitat conditions for wildlife, maintaining visitor facilities and ensuring the safe enjoyment of the County's Nature Reserves and Rights of Way.
As a result of these responsibilities Andy has worked on a variety of different sites including woodland, heathland, wetland, shingle and sand dune systems, and have thus been involved in a wide spectrum of tasks including habitat management, surveying, construction and public/community activities (working with volunteers and kids events).
Habitat Management tasks have included hibernaculum construction, coppicing, glade & ride creation, hedge-laying, pond and ditch clearance, reedbed and sand dune management. This has also involved monitoring wildlife including vegetation, shingle, river corridor, water quality, small mammal, dormouse, butterfly, dragonfly and great-crested newt surveys. He has also had the opportunity to work alongside the Rights of Way team and this has involved the construction of various site furniture including steps, fencing, gates, styles, boardwalks and bridges.
During the placement the main qualification Andy has obtained is an NVQ Level 2 in Environmental Conservation. However, he has also gained qualifications in: 1st Aid at Work; NPCT Chainsaw Licence CS30 & CS31 (Fell & Process Small Trees) and Land Rover Defensive Driving.
As well as these qualifications the scheme has offered a superb range of additional training opportunities which for Andy has included Habitat Regulations, tree and flower identification, butterfly and dragonfly identification, bat identification, 4x4 off road driving, tractor driving, quad biking, tree climbing, hand-tool use/maintenance and bush-craft training. He has also participated in a variety of training days relating to the management of specific habitats including woodland, heathland, sand dune, shingle & wetland sites.
"I am hoping the experience gained from the scheme will allow me to find a job as a Ranger. I would like to continue to work outdoors and actively participate in the management and conservation of our countryside. Long-term, I would like to be responsible for a site and be fully involved in the creation and implementation of Management Plans." He added.
The Trainee Ranger Course has been running for over twenty years and is the perfect placement for anyone committed to developing a career in conservation – from graduates who need to back up their theoretical knowledge, to people with an interest in conservation who want a career change!

Phil Slack – Volunteer Officer and Ex-Trainee says, "We are especially keen to help those dedicated people who have found it hard to gain a footing in the environmental sector. In return East Sussex County Council gain a dedicated and hard working team of six people, who are developing the skills we need for our operation, for less then the cost of one full time employee. In the past we have had Trainees go on to work for organisation as diverse as English Nature, The Wildlife Trusts and various local authorities’ and even a one who became a “Play Ranger”. However, the real testament to how important the Trainee Rangers are to us is that many continue to work for us after they have completed the scheme."
Trainee Rangers are recruited every six months and the next intake will be around August time. Occasional volunteering I’d forgotten what it’s like to crawl out of bed in the darkness of a winter Sunday morning. 7.30am who would ever volunteer for this? It’s cold and it’s raining. Anyway, this doesn’t happen very often, my idea of giving something back to the environment. A day of graft with a good bunch of “tree-huggers”, plenty of tea and chat, probably blisters to boot, but at least there’s a pint in the pub when the work is done. I rush to catch the minibus at the usual pick-up spot Cardiff Museum. A motley crew they look, woolly hats, lumberjack shirts, and steel toe-caps, but I have to admit their spirit is impeccable. Conversation is buoyant, despite hangovers and the damp drizzle. Today this merry bunch are off to Cwm George – a wooded valley near Dinas Powys, owned by the Woodland Trust. Our work: ever glamorous bramble bashing. But first to the toolshed to collect our weapons. |
![]() |
You might have guessed, this is not my usual Sunday. I think of it as my penance – a bit like karma. Repaying society for my usual slovenly and consumerist ways. I admit there is also something wholesome and satisfying about reuniting with the great outdoors, with sweat and dirt, and rediscovering muscles you thought you never had. The years of office work have turned me soft, and I figure that a day of physical labour every couple of months is good for the soul. Any more would put a certain strain on family relations, with swimming and ballet lessons for the kids in the balance.
By 10.00am we are on site and we’ve had our first cup of tea. It has stopped raining and the sun is poking through the clouds. Slasher in hand I approach a bank of bramble 8 foot high and as impenetrable as barbed wire…
I am amazed by what our group of a dozen slasher-wielding warriors achieves in a morning. Ben a local to the area works like a machine hacking left and right in sweeping arcs. Bramble capitulates and young saplings are freed from its clutches. Volunteer power, that’s what it is, we proudly survey the debris.
Lunch never tasted so good, the chat is flowing and even the sun is shining. What could be better? An afternoon of work still remains, with the ever-nearing prize – that pint of ale in the pub when the work is done.

SCRA – Volunteering in the Countryside Sector in Scotland
The Scottish Countryside Rangers’ Association (SCRA) is a membership association run by and for Rangers in Scotland. We are the representative professional body for Countryside Rangers and associated professions in Scotland – and we are run by volunteers. Volunteers are critical to the work that SCRA does, but more than that, volunteers are critical to the work of the sector. We are extremely fortunate in the Countryside Sector to be able to welcome the support of 1000’s of volunteers across the country – the quiet army that helps to manage and protect our heritage for years to come. I suspect that there is no other sector that attracts this level of support and commitment from all walks of life. |
For those of us fortunate to be paid for our work, most have started their time volunteering – recent work done by SCRA suggests that 90% of Rangers in Scotland have volunteered prior to their first post, and most for more than 6 months. But it does not stop there! As one of those fortunate ones being paid, I can happily confirm that I still volunteer and probably on more projects than I did before I was paid! Either by putting in that bit extra and doing those extra 3 or 4 hours a week to get the job done, or by getting involved in community projects or conservation projects above and beyond – oh, and of course, being involved in SCRA!
So, when we are doing those 6 months voluntary work what are we doing? Well it could be anything and everything – litter collection, vegetation management, invasive species control, path management – the list is endless. Our Ranger Service works with many groups on regular and periodic bases, over the past few years we have seen almost 1000 extra man days contributed to our work each year by volunteers – that’s almost equivalent to 5 paid posts!!
Volunteering is obviously of massive benefit to the Countryside Sector and to those of us that work there. But it also gives the volunteer a great deal. The last few years have seen some interesting changes – we now see doctors in some areas referring patients to volunteer groups – the activity helps address health and fitness complaints, and in some areas, is used to relieve stress or other mental health issues, an ever increasing number of Duke of Edinburgh and John Muir Award students are seeking voluntary opportunities to help them gain an award, businesses organise team days for staff – building morale in their work place, but also ‘giving something back’ to the community, and of course, volunteers can use experience gained to improve their chances of employment and aid personal development.
But lets not forget the many hundreds that turn up come rain or shine, to work with those fortunate paid professionals, to volunteer their time for no particular reason other than they enjoy the experience. On behalf of SCRA, and of Rangers in Scotland – thank you.

There’s a big welcome for volunteers at Plantlife
Beth Newman, Plantlife’s Information Management Officer, worked as a volunteer with Plantlife for five months before being offered a permanent post five years ago. She describes how volunteers can enrich an organisation like Plantlife, with each bringing different skills and experiences to help Plantlife achieve its goals. |
![]() |
| Plantlife is lucky to have attracted many dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year, some on a short-term basis and others regularly over long periods of time. Many volunteers, termed Flora Guardians by Plantlife, are keen to get out in the field to help with surveys or plant monitoring. Others, however, are happy to work at our Salisbury and Stirling offices, providing valuable support for the projects that are developed and maintained there. Office volunteering can be an effective way of contributing to environmental work whilst gaining new skills, improving employment potential within the conservation sector and allowing like-minded people a platform to meet and share ideas. | ||
|
|
Plantlife’s Salisbury head office is a friendly, busy office, housing staff from the conservation, finance, marketing, and administration teams. As with many charities, there is always ‘too much to do and not enough time to do it in’, and volunteers are essential in helping deliver the heavy workload that makes up Plantlife’s annual work plan. Each volunteer is unique, with different motivations for becoming a Flora Guardian for Plantlife, and two current volunteers - profiled below - illustrate this. Sue Harris has volunteered at Plantlife for the last five years. She became interested in wildflowers at a young age and fondly remembers searching out wildflowers in the North Downs with encouragement from her father. After retiring, Sue relocated to Salisbury and decided to start volunteering. With more spare time to give and a desire to contribute to a worthwhile cause that matched with her personal interest in the natural world, Sue has been much in demand at the office. She has catalogued images for the photo library, carried out image research for publications, and proofread articles and reports. She is currently a key part of the team developing Plantlife’s Important Plant Areas programme in the UK, researching species and existing conservation designations to further this work. |
Emma Keens has been volunteering at Plantlife for five months. A recent graduate from Southampton University, Emma wants to build on her existing skills to pursue a job in the conservation sector. She approached Plantlife with a view to improving her CV, getting an insight into how a small NGO is run, and contributing to work that benefits the environment. Emma has researched the problem of non-native invasive species, and the effectiveness of eradication techniques, and most recently has been working to digitise Important Plant Area boundaries from paper maps.
Plantlife cannot overestimate the value that Flora Guardians bring to the organisation. As well as the actual work completed, each volunteer brings their own individual set of skills and experiences which enrich the organisation and make it function more effectively. All volunteers are different but all are willing to dedicate their time to helping protect our most valuable resource, our natural world.
We are currently seeking office volunteers for a variety of tasks. For more information an all types of volunteering please email: enquiries@plantlife.org.uk or call 01722 342730. Volunteers are also sought for opportunities at Plantlife Scotland's office in Stirling. For more information, email deborah.long@plantlife.org.uk or phone 01786 478509.

Youth Volunteering Festival
![]() |
In September 2008, the National Trust & English Heritage held its first ever youth volunteering festival ‘ReVOLution’ which attracted over 200 young people to celebrate volunteering. They took part in a massive conservation challenge (doing 2 years of conservation work in one day!) in the woodlands of the Killerton estate near Exeter, Devon. The free festival had been organised by a small core group of volunteers who shaped the whole look and feel of the festival, using their talents and enthusiasm to take forward different areas that interested them. |
|
People arrived and set up camp for 2 nights, were fed great locally sourced organic food and had the chance to enjoy the various evening entertainments including a youth theatre group doing a outdoor production of their own play ‘Shakespeare on Dartmoor’, 2 fantastic bands ‘Fortune Favours’ and ‘The Madrips’, a stand up comic Tom Rosenthal, a multi-talented folk beat boxer Vid Warren, as well as some great DJ’s. In return they had to put their energy and enthusiasm to good use and help the National Trust wardens to clear an area of overgrown woodland, to return it to a woodland pasture system that will enable the area to be grazed and will encourage the return of flowers, orchids and butterflies that had previously struggled for daylight. Massive bonfires and lots of tired people later, the festival goers had made a massive impact and fantastic contribution. |
![]() |
![]() |
One key outcome of the event was obviously the impact it had on the young people who attended and organised the event. For some it was their first experience of the National Trust & English Heritage, for others who had visited properties before, it was their first chance to enjoy our organisations in a completely different way. Another key outcome for us has been the connections we have made with our local vinvolved teams in the South West. ‘Vinvolved teams’ came into existence in April 2008 across England with the core purpose of helping organisations to develop volunteering opportunities for 16 – 25 year olds. Each local authority area has a vinvolved team which has received 3 years funding from the national youth volunteering charity ‘v’. Not only can they help you to recruit youth volunteers, but they can also help you to develop the appropriate policies and procedures, and provide training and guidance to help you organise successful opportunities. This represents a fantastic opportunity for heritage and conservation organisations to get more young people involved in what we are doing through partnership working. |
For more information on vinvolved teams please go to www.wearev.com. For more information on Revolution 08, please email Hannah.mayell@nationaltrust.org.uk

We provide an apprenticeship in ecology, enabling team members to carry out an ambitious work programme and also provide them with the experience and skills they need to apply for various legally protected species licences. Project management and team working and report writing are skills that all team members have the opportunity to develop at SERC. Trainees also acquire very good GIS skills as well as a good grounding in aerial photo interpretation, NVC and habitat mapping. Nothing helps you acquire in-depth skills as effectively as being able to consolidate training by putting it into immediate practice in real work. This is one of the SERC training schemes greatest strengths and where it most differs from an academic course and includes aquatic invertebrate and macrophyte monitoring and detailed botanical monitoring work. Other day to day survey work includes water voles, great crested newts and surveying for bats using time expansion detectors and analysing the recordings. |
SERC has a nigh on perfect track record in getting people into paid conservation jobs. In recent years this has predominantly been to consultancy jobs but also to Wildlife Trusts, local authorities and to countryside agencies. Some organisations come to us direct, without advertising, when seeking to fill posts. SERC itself is the main first employer of its own trainees.
Almost everyone who comes to SERC has a science first degree, about half our trainees have an MSc and 5% have a PhD but are looking to fast track the acquisition of really solid work experience enabling them to fast track to higher levels up the non-academic career ladder.
Being a trainee at SERC is a full time commitment, 9.30-5.30 five days a week. Trainees commit to staying at SERC until they find paid work in the environment, which can take up to a year. Most fund themselves by claiming benefits and when eligible usually sign on to ‘New Deal’. Those ineligible for benefits fund themselves while here, a year at SERC being a much cheaper option than paying for an MSc and yet more likely to lead to a sustainable paid career in conservation.

Hannah Gibbons was a trainee here four years ago, and this is what she has to say about the scheme: “Although I had a BSc and an MSc I was still unable to find a job in conservation due to a lack of practical skills. I learned a great deal at SERC including plant identification and how to carry out habitat surveys and protected species surveys. I learned the vast majority of my plant identification skills when specimens were not flowering, a skill which has really helped me in my subsequent employment roles. Since volunteering at SERC I have worked as a Field Botanist for the University for Reading, an Ecological Consultant and I am now back working for the Somerset Wildlife Trust on the Brue Valley Living Landscapes Project. SERC provided a much needed step into employment following university education. I had a great time learning a wide range of skills from a wide range of people and I made some excellent friends who I hope to stay in contact with for many years to come”

Volunteering in the Environmental Education Sector
Groundwork Kent & Medway is an environmental regeneration charity based in Gillingham, Kent. Local communities are at the heart of its philosophy and by working in partnership they deliver successful and inspirational projects, from play areas to gardening clubs, skate parks to school activities. Groundwork’s Education Team deliver a range of different programmes in schools, specifically targeting the National Curriculum across all key stages and also out of school activities introducing attendees to a wide variety of issues. Groundwork has a history of using volunteers to assist in the planning and delivery of its education programmes and acknowledges that it is a mutually beneficial arrangement. |

Benefits for the Volunteer People looking to volunteer in the environmental sector do so for a wide range of different reasons, whether it be to enhance their CV or using their spare time to make a difference. With jobs in the environmental sector becoming more competitive many job seekers are seeking to make their CV stand out. Volunteering provides opportunities for potential employees to show commitment. Essential or Desirable Skills in satisfying any of the key selection criteria on a job application can be gained by volunteering. Within Environmental Education positions, experience in working with young people, delivering sessions in outdoor situations, carrying out risk assessments etc. are all areas requested by employers. Volunteering in this sector can allow candidates to gain these skills improving their position when applying for paid posts. Benefits for Groundwork Groundwork Kent & Medway is a charity dependent upon grants and external funding to survive. Working with volunteers allows Groundwork’s Education Team to maintain its budgets through the cost savings that the volunteers provide. Many of Groundwork’s outdoor education activities take place in natural areas such as country parks and woodlands. When conducting a pond dipping session with young children the risk assessment will require a ratio of one adult to six children to ensure the participants’ safety. Volunteers are a great asset when large numbers of participants require such supervision. |
What’s required of a volunteer?
When working with young and vulnerable people staff are required to be CRB (criminal background) checked and to have undertaken child protection and first aid training.
Before all sessions the volunteers are prepped and given a run down of the session and the information and skills that will be delivered, risk assessments are explained along with the health and safety implications of the activities. For experienced volunteers there are opportunities to deliver elements of the session under the supervision of Groundwork’s staff.
Last but most importantly the volunteer must bring a desire to make a positive difference not only to the environment but to the lives of the participants.
Paul Koch, Education & Publicity Officer.

CMA and ‘RANGER’ Volunteering Special Edition
The Countryside Management Association (CMA) is the largest organisation of its kind representing professionals engaged in countryside and urban greenspace management throughout England and Wales. The CMA offers to volunteers the same thing that it offers to all members, networking, recognition, information, Continuing Professional Development, but all at a special rate. All CMA officers are volunteers and do their CMA roles in their spare time. There is always the opportunity for people volunteering in the countryside and environment sector to also volunteer for these roles so long as they meet the Person Specification for the role in question. |
‘RANGER’ the national magazine of the CMA will be promoting volunteering in its next edition due out this month. The magazine will feature the latest research on what motivates countryside volunteers, volunteer projects from Europe, proven key ways to engage communities and much, much more. Some articles are contributed by active volunteers. All in all it’s not to be missed if you organise volunteers or volunteer yourself.
Mike Anderson, CMA Secretary says ‘Volunteering with CMA has given me the opportunity to develop skills in strategy and policy, report writing, etc that are essential for career progression and weren't forthcoming from my previous post as a country park officer’.
CMA Administration can be contacted during normal office hours, and an answerphone is available at other times. Telephone: 01245 424116 Email: cma@writtle.ac.uk

Good communications are essential to keep audiences informed & aware of the event’s progression & key issues.
The following positions are for the EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater Project. Volunteers needed all year.
Boat Based Observations We aim to do about 4 days to 1 week per month of observations. We can also combine 2 months together to do 1 14 day trip for the right candidate. BUT Able to ID seabirds (training provided, but some basic skills required). Might involve spending days at sea. Data will be logged in the European Seabirds at Sea database so will be of international value.
Surveys of Shearwaters from Land Spending time on cliffs seawatching is a great way to spend the day. You will be stationed at a number of different colonies to count the number of shearwaters rafting / flying / fishing in the area with a view to using this data to designate Marine IBAs (seaward extensions of breeding colonies). BUT Good seabird ID skills. Willing to hire a car & drive out to look out points.
Site Based Work The project site of Rdum tal-Madonna is a spectacular rocky peninsula in the north of Malta. Chance to spend some time outdoors on the site, helping our warden improve the site for wildlife & people & assisting the project in the management planning process. There is little history of SPA management in Malta, esp these cliff top sites. Talking face to face with people is likely to have a very positive effect so we need vols with people skills. We are particularly keen to attract people with site management experience (e.g. Site Wardens, Site Managers, ecologists) to help our site warden & give the site management work some direction. We also need people with monitoring skills, particularly experience of vegetation monitoring to help us develop suitable conservation objectives for the habitats on the sites. Also practical skills such as rubble wall repair.
Office Based Work There are a number of projects which could be undertaken from the office, everything from helping us with financial reporting & fundraising to preparing workshops, but it is difficult to predict what will need doing until we know the dates & skills of the vols. Best to approach us on an adhoc basis! All posts: Living arrangements probably hotel. Some include training in survey techniques and some may even pay expenses. A couple are advertised in this edition.
