Front Page news

in the local paper.

Well it got your attention. On Saturday evening there was a very large yellow Sea King RAF Search & Rescue helicopter flying round for quite a while. Turns out that some fool had been tombstoning down one of the many waterfalls, and damaged their back. This particular waterfall is notorious in the village and the footpath has only just been reopened this summer. For more see the Whitby Gazette. And much as we love to see the Sea Kings (lovely piece of machinery if a little noisy) please don't do anything so silly.

Juno (one of the office dogs) had a couple of lumps removed yesterday so she's a bit sore and grumbly today and is wearing a very fetching tee-shirt and one sock with a lampshade collar in reserve.

Tomorrow is the village Flower & Veg show, HB is the secretary so has taken today off to try to get organised (and bake enough cakes to feed the five thousand).

CJS Monthly went out as usual on Tuesday and should have reached everyone by now, CJS Weekly with September's training calendar is currently printing and will soon be on it's way to postal readers, digital copies already available. You're also getting the CJS Focus with this edition - more of which next week.

And for now that's it.

CJS Monthly

It's not Friday the Thirteenth is it?
This morning the broadband disappeared (it reappeared later after kicking lots of different bits of equipment and several cups of coffee) and then one of the colour printers broke down - it's only just been serviced! So as a result the Monthly publication is still printing - in bits on the older slower printers, we've got our fingers crossed it will be finished in time to get it in the envelopes and out in the post tonight. This month there are five pages of hard copy and an additional seven online for the events diary.
The digital version is already online, click here to read it.
But the sun in shining and although it wasn't quite warm enough to eat out at lunch time it soon will be and the building is covered in scaffolding in preparation for some new windows after Easter, more on those another time.

Is falling off the printers, five pages of jobs plus four of events. All now online and freely available
For some reason the Weekly update didn't appear. As you've probably worked out by now it was published as usual, with 55 jobs (31 direct to CJS) on nine pages.

Everything else is going swimmingly (almost literally – will it ever stop raining and dry up??) and our Data Manager is now returned from India – complete with snorter of a cold and beautifully hennaed hands.

How the year flies by.

We've just added the 2009 publication dates for CJS Monthly [click here]. The January edition will be one we later than usual and will be published on Thursday 15 January, the third Thursday of the month rather than the second. This is due to the proximity of the New Year bank holidays; we don't think we (or you) will be ready for a Monthly edition on the eighth, especially as the CJS office will only have been open a few hours before the normal copy deadline. But there are still two editions of this year still to go so need to fret just yet.

Monthly, Weekly and Swords

The June Monthly, after a small hiccup (does nothing ever run smoothly?) was published as usual. Details of the vacancies are freely available online and are in this week's CJS Weekly which is even now rolling off the printers. In addition to details from the Monthly it also contains July's Training Calendar. It's 15 pages plus a further four of training calendar, and a massive 142 new paid posts of which 72 came direct to CJS

In local news the Goathland Plough Stots, our local traditional Long Sword dance team, a lethal variety of morris dancing for those you who haven't come across this before, are worried about the future of their dancing. In the recently passed legislation aimed at reducing knife crime a series of exemptions for carrying 'weapons' in a public place were included, but not one for the ceremonial dancing swords. For more about this see the report in the Whitby Gazette. (AW's husband is one of the senior team.) For more about the Stots see here: http://www.goathlandploughstots.co.uk/

April's Monthly.

From baking temperatures, not quite coffee in the garden but not far off, to snow and freezing conditions over the weekend. Yesterday the papers didn't reach the village until 11am due the dreadful road conditions, even the dogs struggled, ice dance for Labradors anyone? Today Goathland has been dry and is now basking in sunshine but less than two miles away the roads were once again impassable because of the sudden and fierce snow falls. Through it all CJS keeps on bashing those keyboards and today the Monthly edition has been completed. It's already online and if you get an electronic reminder you should have that very soon. Paper editions will be landing on desks on Thursday.

CJS Special Edition, Monthly and Weekly publications.

It's been a busy old week, with a monster CJS Monthly on Tuesday, 11 pages long making it one of the largest for quite a while. This was the first time we used the new mailing system and sent a large proportion electronically but it seems to have worked quite well.

Then we've been working on putting together the latest quarterly Special Edition which this time features volunteer work and again it's the largest we've produced at 23 pages long. And last but not least today is CJS Weekly deadline and guess what? Yes, that right it's another huge one at 16 pages long plus a further three for the March training calendar. This week's edition contains 114 new paid posts of which 71 (that's 2/3rds) came direct to CJS. It's going to a mighty thump when this little lot lands on your doormat on Monday morning!

CJS Monthly - December edition on route at last!

After a several delays and more than a few problems (some mechanical, a few technical and some human error) we finally managed to get CJS Monthly, printed, put in its envelopes and it's now somewhere in the postal system. Bearing in mind Christmas post it should be with you by the end of the week. However, it's freely available online as usual.

Today has dawned bright and very cold, treacherous underfoot when out with the dogs this mooring. The birds are queuing for the feed station – it's now early afternoon and where the sun hasn't reached the frost is still lying thickly.

Great excitement – the builders came back today, this time to start on the new path! The drystone wall is in heaps across the garden - don't worry we have a waller on hand to put it back together when the new path is finished.

CJS Monthly and news about the post.

After a bit of panic (one piece of artwork was taking the scenic cyber route via Pluto!) CJS Monthly is now printing. This month it's seven sides again with an additional four pages of events. And it contains an ad for CJS, yes, we're recruiting again. This time we need a part-time admin assistant – think you fit the bill? Then log on and read more.

In other news, we've had two communications about the post. First we heard from our local Royal mail sorting office that they're ceasing Sunday collections (nationwide not just in our little corner), we're looking at how this will affect CJS Weekly deliveries. And the other postage news comes from CWU (the posties union) the long running talks between the union and RM have broken down without any resolution so there are more strikes heading our way. Remember to log onto to the Royal Mail page of the website to find out what's happening and how it's affecting CJS.

10 August 2007

Well what a week!

CJS Monthly on Tuesday was published as normal and is fully available online and was collected by the posties as usual on Wednesday so it should be with most of you by now. BUT just as were finishing off the broadband connection disappeared (6.42pm precisely). We were tired and frazzled so it was left until morning. Wednesday morning still nothing, BT were their usual helpful selves on all three occasions when we phoned on Wednesday – turns out the whole village was out and we still don't know why. Thursday a repeat performance so a quick call to the local paper prompted a swift call from BT press office and lo and behold a couple of hours later the broadband is back! And so far that's the way it has stayed – but there are no guarantees that it will remain as BT seem unable to tell us what the exact fault was. So we wait for the next time. To add to the fun and games the electricity supply for one our homeworkers was also out on Thursday, although we did know about that one. Anyway despite all the obstacles we have managed to keep updating the website and have produced CJS Weekly as usual and it is currently printing, 11 sides containing 89 new vacancies 53 of which came to CJS direct.

Postal strike action latest.

News just received indicates that Royal Mail workers will be on strike next Tuesday / Wednesday, when CJS Monthly is due to be collected. This will not affect the online copy but will most likely mean that the paper copies due to you on Thursday will be delayed. We'll try to find out more next week.
Any information we do receive is posted at: http://www.countryside-jobs.com/CJS_Stuff/royal_mail.htm

CJS Monthly - July Edition

A bit late but yesterday the July edition of CJS Monthly was completed and was this morning collected by the postie – so RM permitting it should be with you tomorrow. It's already online and the e-minders have been sent.
Tomorrow's the day when we may loose electricity so it's possible our usual service will be disrupted; we'll carry on as normal as far as possible but it means that the online ads may not be updated until late Thursday evening or even Friday morning.

CJS Monthly - June 2007.

It's a short one this month, just five pages with an additional four of events which mean that the printing was quick. It's online for you to peruse at leisure. We had a bit of a problem with the email e-minders but we think that's sorted and they've all been sent this morning.

New for this month - the Events Diary is online in a separate downloadable pdf.

Hope you all had a happy and sunshine filled Easter.

CJS Monthly made it -

the reserve envelopes finally turned up this afternoon, very battered but useable – just. But that was too late for the poor envelope stuffers who had to fold 376 copies - could have been worse, it might have been 673 copies!!

CJS Monthly has lots of new features this month, there are two adverts in full colour online, next month you'll be able to advertise in the paper copy in colour too. It's now online in a downloadable PDF format as well as the usual webpages and the new software means we're able to email reminders with full links direct to readers (sorry only available to people transferring from paper copies). Click here to read the March edition, it's six pages long plus four pages of Events Diary (only available online).

What no envelopes??

Everything arrived on time for the March Monthly edition, it all fell neatly into place and the printers chuntered away thundering out several thousand sheets. BUT and this is a big but it's now 4.30pm and we've not had this weeks delivery of paper and envelopes, we're already one delivery adrift so we've used our surplus envelopes and at the moment we're 400 – 500 envelopes short. We realised this may be problem yesterday and ordered more envelopes from another supplier who promised delivery today – but they're not here yet either (but the free gift is!). To get the Monthly out for Royal Mail they all have to ready to go by 7am tomorrow morning at the latest. I have a horrible feeling we may end up folding by hand 500 copies of CJS Monthly – RSI here we come.

It's been one of those days.

Yesterday was deadline day for CJS Monthly and although everything was in on time and the printers behaved and managed to print all the required copies we've not got the website completely updated. The February edition is online in full and you can see it at: http://www.countryside-jobs.com/cjsmonthly/Monthly.htm However, the details have not yet been emailed out neither is CJS Daily Online completely updated with the new edition – we'll get that done today.
