Tomorrow's Saturday – thank goodness.

Today has not been a good day. It started with a large soot fall which office dog Cara (IWH) walked over as many carpets as she could, then delays with display adverts for CJS Weekly and one, which in a first for CJS, we actually rejected – you didn't want to be a licence officer for taxis and bingo halls now did you – thought not. But at last the printers are running and barring any further disasters your CJS will be with you later today for online readers and on Monday for postal subscribers. This week's edition is 14 sides long including 102 new paid vacancies of which 42 were sent direct to CJS from the employer.

CJS staff have had an 'interesting' weekend.

Last week we heard a knocking noise, the dogs thought there was a burglar breaking in but no-one was seen. Then later we heard it again and a more thorough search ensued but still nothing. However, on Friday we lost a thimblette (rubber finger tip for helping count paper etc), of which more later, and in searching for it we saw that the side of the solid oak chest of draws on which rests the 3 foot long fish tank had split from top to bottom! Oops!! - on closer inspection we found that the tank has been leaking, condensation from the lid running down the front and seeping under the protective polystyrene into the inch thick top which, as wood does, had expanded and then in the warm sunshine split asunder leaving the tank in a rather precarious position. So first thing Saturday morning the tank was emptied of most of its 20something gallons of warm water and gently moved to another solid, non-wooden table where it was refilled with half the original water and half new (which as this is a tropical tank had to be warmed to 25ºC before being added otherwise the fish stop metabolising and tend to die..) and then the fish were all returned to their nice clean tank. We don’t think any of them have objected to the point of turning up their fins, a few were off their food over the weekend but all seem to be back to normal.

We return to the missing 'finger' – one of the office dogs is an Irish Wolfhound which, as any reader of James Herriot will know, like to eat anything their enormous jaws can grasp and yes you've guessed it Cara had swiped the thimblette from under our noses. Last time she nicked one it involved vets assistance but this time this one has emerged intact – lovely!

And that's not all of the animal antics and disasters. TB was skittled by one of her lurchers, he came dashing up behind her at full tilt, ran into the back of her legs at about knee height and, as if in slow motion, her feet rose to where moments before her shoulders had been and the ground met her back and head with an almighty crack. Resulting in heavy bruising, slight concusion but nothing life threatening.

Webstats, cookies and CJS.

It's been reported this week that many websites are using inaccurate traffic statistics. It's been found that cookies used to track user behaviour could be over-counted. If, like CJS, you regularly remove the junk from your system you'll probably remove all of those annoying cookies in your temporary files, that makes us 'serial resetters' apparently. Getting rid of the cookies makes some sites deposit another one on your system and that is logged by that site as a new unique user – so if you've ever wondered how some places can claim to have huge numbers of users now you know. You'll be delighted to know that CJS has never used this system of tracking users. We count the number of times a page or file is accessed on our system which provides a more accurate reflection of web usage. Admittedly it's not as easy as having a little gizmo which counts for you but we feel it sits better with our ethical status. If you'd like to know more about web counting tools please have a look at the BBC report at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6564671.stm

It's Friday.

Which means another edition of CJS Weekly has hit the presses, once again it's 12 sides long but this time with 89 new paid posts, 47 of which were sent directly to CJS from the employer. Unfortunately there's something strange going on with the email copies, some people haven't received the RTF attachment, some have got two – now if only we could even that out I'm sure there's enough to go round!

Webshop fully functional

We've resolved the problems with the webshop – or we think we have! We've also been able to add an option for corporate purchasers to supply purchase order details and request an invoice to be sent directly to the finance office.

Meet Bill.

CJS welcomed a new member of staff today. AN brought her new puppy Bill to work this afternoon. He's a 16 week-old border collie, very handsome and canny too. The resident office dogs welcomed him with open paws, Juno (boss dog) soon put him in his place, Maia (Juno's younger sister) thought it was great having a playmate but Cara (the wolfhound) couldn't be bothered and sauntered off to lie in the watery sunshine.
So apologies to anyone who rang this afternoon and was put off by the squeaking and growling in the background.

Spring has sprung - it's official.

It may have been a shorter than usual week but we've been as busy as ever. Monday's edition of CJS Weekly is rolling off the printers and is now available to view online. It maybe only 10 sides long this week but it has 109 new vacancies of which 68 came to CJS direct from the employer.

Nature news: On Wednesday at 4.35pm the first swallow was sighted, resting on wires in the yard of a local farm and today another local has reported hearing the first cuckoo. CJS staff have been stuck in the office so have not been to see or hear these new arrivals, although we have been watching the new lambs in the field across the road from the office and the starlings feasting on leatherjackets in the lawn, which was mowed for the first time this week.

It's the pre-Easter flood.

A small heap of jobs ads have been posted online today including one for Scarborough Borough Council, our local authority, so if you'd like to work just down the road from CJS in the beautiful countryside of North Yorkshire have a look at this one. We've a few new ideas brewing so as they say "Watch this space"…

If you emailed us last night (Wednesday 3/4) and you've not a response please email again (sorry) our mailbox was overfilled by several huge documents and some emails may have bounced back.
